What is the Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register is “the only official gas registration body of gas businesses and engineers in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.”

It replaced CORGI back in 2009, and helps ensure anyone doing gas work is properly trained and qualified. If someone’s not on the register, they shouldn’t be touching your boiler, cooker, or any other gas appliance—simple as that.

How to find a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer

When it comes to gas work, you don’t want to take any chances. That’s why it’s so important to make sure the person you hire is properly qualified and officially registered. Thankfully, it's easy to check that you're in safe hands.

1. Check that they’re on the Gas Safe Register

This is the most important step, because if they’re not on the Gas Safe Register, they’re not legally allowed to do gas work.

To check if someone’s registered, just visit the Gas Safe Register’s “Check an Engineer” tool online or give them a quick call. All you’ll need is the engineer’s unique 7-digit licence number, which you can find on their Gas Safe ID card.

All registered engineers are issued this card. It shows their photo, licence number, and what types of gas work they’re qualified to carry out. Always ask to see it before they get started.

If you’re using a HomeServe engineer, you can rest assured that you’re in safe hands. Our engineers always carry official ID showing they’re Gas Safe registered, so you can have peace of mind from the moment they arrive.

2. Check the engineer is qualified for your job

Just because someone is on the Gas Safe Register doesn’t mean they can handle every type of gas job. Engineers have different qualifications depending on their training and experience, so it’s important to make sure they’re certified for the specific work you need done.

The good news? You don’t have to guess. On the back of their Gas Safe ID card, there’s a list of the types of gas work they’re qualified to carry out—things like gas boilers, cookers, and more. Take a quick look before they start the job to make sure it matches what you need. It’s a simple step that can save you time and hassle to keep your home safe.

3. Ask around for a recommendation

Sometimes the best way to find someone trustworthy is by asking the people you trust. Friends, family, or neighbours might have used a Gas Safe registered engineer recently and can share their experience, good or bad. A personal recommendation is a great way to start narrowing down your options.

Once you’ve got a name, remember to double-check they’re on the Gas Safe register before booking them in.

If no one you know has a name to pass on, not to worry! At HomeServe, we can help connect you with our fully qualified, Gas Safe registered engineers that you can rely on.

4. Research thoroughly

Before you book anyone, take a bit of time to do your homework. Even if an engineer is Gas Safe registered, it's still worth checking out what others have to say about their work. A little research can go a long way in helping you avoid unreliable service.

It’s important to remember to be cautious when searching online: not all websites or reviews are genuine, and the internet isn’t always well-regulated.

Make sure to stick to trusted platforms and look for consistent feedback, not just a handful of glowing comments. Reputable review sites or testimonials from real customers can give you a much clearer picture of the engineer’s reliability and professionalism.

A few extra minutes spent researching could save you a lot of stress later on.

Why do I need a Gas Safe registered engineer?

When it comes to gas work, cutting corners isn’t just risky, it’s illegal and unsafe.

Gas Safe registered engineers are fully trained and qualified to work safely on gas appliances. They know what they’re doing, and they’ve been checked to make sure they meet the right safety standards. This is crucial for protecting your home from things like gas leaks, carbon monoxide, and unsafe installations.

On top of that, using a Gas Safe registered engineer can also help keep your gas appliance warranties and home insurance valid. Many providers require proof that any gas work has been done by someone properly registered, so it’s definitely worth making sure you’ve got the right person for the job.

Things to look out for when choosing a Gas Safe registered engineer

Even if someone says they’re Gas Safe registered, it’s worth keeping your eyes open for red flags. Unfortunately, some unqualified engineers try to pass themselves off as registered, so staying alert can save you from a lot of hassle.

Here are a few things to watch out for:

  • Fake use of the Gas Safe logo: Just because a van or website shows the logo doesn’t mean the engineer is actually registered. Always check the Gas Safe Register to be sure.
  • Confusing jargon: If they’re using technical language to avoid giving you a clear answer, that’s a red flag. A good engineer should be able to explain things in a way you can understand.
  • No ID card: Every registered engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card. If they don’t show it when you ask or they make excuses, it’s best to be cautious.
  • Bad or no online reviews: A lack of feedback (or lots of negative reviews) can be a warning sign that others haven’t had a great experience.
  • Trust your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to walk away and find someone else.
